～Repent From History - The cold and heat hells come together～

A monk asked Dongshan, "When the cold and heat hells come together, how should one avoid them?" Dongshan said, "Why not go to a place where there is neither cold nor heat?" The monk said, "What kind of place is it where there is neither cold nor heat?" Dongshan said, "When it is cold, the cold kills you; when it is hot, the heat kills you."  (The blue cliff record Case 43: Dongshan's "Cold and Heat")

"One who binds start in his life with its end and makes a step forward is a man who lives in heaven while staying in this world." This is a comment that someone in Europe used to described Jesus' life. Jesus was not crucified only once in his 34 years lifetime. His whole 34 years of life itself was the Crucifixion and all things that happened in his life were to fulfil the words of God.

The gospels of Matthew and Luke, which are both written in chronological manner, took up the scene of Jesus entering the temple in Jerusalem while riding a donkey with a colt and leading the crowds, acording to the Old Testament, at the later parts as the climax of his life. However the gospel of John puts this scene at the start of his evangelism. The writer of the gospel of John seems to try to fully show that Jesus's life was to fulfil the words of god and that "in the beginning was the Word".

The Greek word "Basileia", the origin of the phrase "the kingdom of God", is said to mean the realization of God's rule. Jesus showed us the way to realize the kingdom of God through practicing "the word of God" in other words "the divine mandate from Heaven" in terms of Confucianism and to live in heaven while staying in this world. The words "anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me" show us the ultimate meaning of Christian practice. It seems to be extremely merciless that you must carry your cross as the symbol of sins, which mankind has committed since the era of Adam and Eve, throughout of your life and to die on it. However once you decide to fulfil the word of God through your offsprings even if it consumes one thousand or ten thousand years, you already live in heaven even though your body still stays in this world. The majority of his twelve Apostles were actually martyred keeping his word.

The safeguards agreement wich India has recently signed with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) showed that the Nuclear non-Proliferation treaty (NPT) and the IAEA inspection system, both of which aim to maintain the existing nuclear-power states' monopoly of nuclear weapons, have been mutilated and no longer function.

The dissolution of the nuclear-power states' monopoly regime led by the USA can be said to be natural both ethically and pragmatically. However the risk of escalation of nuclear weapon development races between Israel and Iran, India and Pakistan and so on and eruption of the regional nuclear wars have become realistic. Moreover the USA's financial crisis is set to spread over the world. Surely the cold hell and heat hell are coming together. How should we avoid them? 

However if we observe calmly, it is obvious that only one answer is available. Not only Pakistan, in fact no one agrees that India can be exempted from signing of the Nuclear non-Proliferation treaty and the IAEA inspection because India is a democratic country. The only way which can please everyone is for total bans to develop, produce and have nuclear weapons and at the same time total liberalization to develop, produce, have and trade civil nuclear equipments and its fuel.

When the Tokugawa shogunate was losing its prestige with the allied forces of Satsuma-han, Choshu-han, Tosa-han and Hizen-han marching into the Edo-castle, Tokugawa still had the biggest military force and could still fight against them. However the Tokugawa government chose disarmament by itself and gave up the Edo-castle bloodlessly. Even if they fought and the allied forces won, the Hans (domains governed by Japanese feudal lords in the Edo period) will continue to have their own military forces and Japan might not became one country. However because the biggest warlord Tokugawa disarmed by its own choice, Satsuma-han, Choshu-han and the other hundreds of Hans had no more cause to have their own militias. Then the new Meiji government could establish a modern uniformed state with the only military force. Therefore it can be said that the Tokugawa government's decision had helped the Meiji-government to establish its foundation.

In the same way, if the leader of free world, USA, initiates to propose the transfer of nuclear weapons to the United Nations, Russia, Britain, France, China and India etc. cannot refuse it.  The nuke race may be eradicated. Especially if part of these nuke-states put up the elimination of nuke as their just cause of having nuclear weapons, they cannot object to the proposal.

It may need one thousand or ten thousand years to eliminate war and terrorism in this world. However it is the responsibility of not only politicians but also for Christians, Buddhists, Muslims and other religionists or common people to aim for this goal and carry their cross and step forward today.

Supplement
When I sent this draft to an acquaintance who publishs Christian mail-magazine, I received the following comment.

One who carried sins, which mankind had committed since the era of Adam and Eve, and died was Jesus. Sins which mankind had committed since the era of Adam and Eve were written off by only his death. There is no way to write off sins for the universe except through his death. Therefore Jesus did not tell his dtsciples to die. And people need not to die for it.

The following is my answer;

Paul said "Have you forgotten that when we were joined with Christ Jesus in baptism, we joined him in his death?" in Romans 6:3. He also said "Give yourselves completely to God, for you were dead, but now you have new life. So use your whole body as an instrument to do what is right for the glory of God." in Romans 6:13.     ～历史的反省--寒暑到来，如何回避～

僧问洞山，寒暑到来，如何回避。山云，何不向无寒暑处去。僧云，如何是无寒暑处。山云，寒时，寒杀闍黎，热时，热杀闍黎。(碧严录第四十三则)

在人生的出发点掌握终点，从那里迈步者是住在人世，活在天上的人。有一位西洋人把耶稣的一生这么评述。耶稣不是在三十四年生涯的最后只一次钉死在十字架上，他的三十四年的生涯就是十字架。他的生涯中的一切事都是神所说的成就。基于旧约的记载乘着母子驴率领一群大众进入耶路撒冷圣殿的场面是耶稣生涯的最高潮，所以编年体写的马太福音与路加福音都把这个场景按年代放在后头。不过约翰福音的著者把这个场面作为耶稣传教的出发点。著者大概企图如实表达『耶稣的生涯成就神所说的话』，『太初有话语』的道理。

神的王国来源处于希腊语『巴赛勒亚(basileia)』。巴赛勒亚的基本意义是神的王权或治理现前。耶稣教导人类通过实践神的话或儒家所说的天命而把神的王国在这个世界现前的方法。他说「不背着他的十字架跟随我的，也不配作我的门徒」。这句话关于实践表达对基督教徒究竟的意思。叫门徒一生背着自己的十字架作为从亚当以来累积人类罪的象征，最后也死在十字架上是似呼非常冷酷无情，不过一但觉悟不管需要一千年或一万年，子子孙孙遵守与实践神的话，这个人可以在人世就活在天上的。实际上大部分的十二个们徒遵守这句话而殉教。

我们在印度最近跟国际原子能机构(IAEA)签署的核保障监督协定上可以看到，维持现有核武国家独占体制的不扩散核武器条约与IAEA视查制度已经被抽掉骨干而不能发挥控制机能。美国率领的西欧国家独占核武体制的崩坏是实际上与道义上都可以说理所当然的事。不过，今后不能控制例如以色列与伊朗之间或印度与巴基斯坦之间的核武竞争而发生地域性核战的危险已经现前了。加上美国金融危机已经波及到全世界的倾向越来越明显，所以正是寒暑到来，到哪里回避。但是冷静思考的话就知道只有一个答案。「因为印度是民主国家，所以免除签署不扩散核武器条约，也免除IAEA的视查」，这种理由不单巴基斯坦，没有一个国家接受。全面禁止核武同时全面开放民用核能是所有人与所有国家会接受的唯一答案。

德川幕府的威信落地，萨长土肥等联合军准备进攻江户城的时候，德川幕府仍然有日本国内最大的军事力量，所以它还可以试一战。不过它自愿解除武装，无血开城。假如两军打一战的话，不管萨长土肥等联合军胜利，诸藩保持自己的军备，所以国家的统一不会实现。不过因为最大的军阀德川幕府自愿解除武装之后，萨摩，长州等诸藩已经失去了保持私人军队的大义名分，所以明治新政府成为唯一雍有军队的现代式统一国家。德川幕府的决断可以说奠定明治政权的基础。

同样地如果自由世界的盟主美国现在带头提议把核武管理权移交联合国的话，俄罗斯，英国，法国，中国，印度等国家也不得不步人后尘。根绝核武竞争不是不可能的事。特别是一些现有核武的国家把根绝核武作为雍有核武的大义名分，所以这些国家没有理由反对这种提案。而且把核武开发的膨大的费用，拨充开发民用核能，也可以自由交易先端核技术，所以有百利而无一害。

从这个世界根除战争与恐怖主义可能还要一千年或一万年，不过把目标放在那里而背着自己的十字架，从今天迈出第一步是可以说不单政治家，而且基督教徒，佛教徒，回教徒，其他的宗教家包含的全人类的义务。

我把这篇底稿送给发行基督教邮件杂志的朋友。他就回信告诉我以下的意见。

背着从亚当以来累积的人类罪在十字架上钉死的是耶稣。耶稣的死清帐所有的罪。除了耶稣的死之外，没有办法清帐人类的罪。耶稣不叫们徒死。人不需要为了这个目的而死。

以下是我的意见

保罗在罗马书第6章第3节说「岂不知我们这受洗归入基督耶稣的人是受洗归入他的死麽？」，在第6章第13节也说「要像从死里复活的人，将自己献给神，并将肢体作义的器具献给神。」

 ～歴史の反省－－寒暑到来、如何か廻避せん～

こす。僧、洞山に問う、「寒暑到来、如何か廻避せん」。山云く、「何ぞ無寒暑の処に向かって去らざる」。僧云く、「如何なるか是れ無寒暑の処」。山云く、「寒時は闍黎（じゃり）を寒殺し、熱時は闍黎を熱殺す」。『碧巌録』第四十三則。

　「人生の初めをその終わりに結びつけてそこから踏み出すものはこの世に居てすでに神の国に生きる者である」とは西洋のさる方がイエスの一生を評した言である。イエスは三十四年の生涯の最後に只一度十字架にかかられたのではない。三十四年の生涯そのものが十字架であった。彼においては生涯を通じてすべての出来事がそのまま神のことばの成就であった。

　編年体で記されたマタイ伝やルカ伝ではイエスが旧約の記述に従い二頭のロバを仕立、大衆を率いてエルサレムの神殿に乗り込む場面をイエスの伝道のクライマックスとして最後に取り上げているが、ヨハネ伝の著者は、この場面をイエスの伝道活動のスタートにしている。これにより、イエスの生涯が神の言葉の成就であったこと、「初めに言葉ありき」と言うことを如実に示そうとしたものと見られる。

　神の国のギリシア語の語源バシレイアとは、「神の支配が現成すること」と言う。イエスは神の言葉(天命)の実践を通じて神の国を現成させ、この世に居ながらにして神の国に生きる道を人類に示されたのである。「誰でも十字架を負って私に従う者でなければ、私の弟子とは言えない」と言う言葉はキリスト者としての実践の究極の意味を示したもの言える。アダム以来人類が犯し続けて来た罪の徴(しるし)としての十字架を生涯背負い続け、最後に十字架にかかって死ねと言うのは極めて非情だが、ひとたび「千年かかろうと、万年であろうと、子々孫々にわたり神の言葉を成就する」ことを覚悟するなら、そのものはこの世に居てすでに神の国に生きる者である。十二使徒の多くが、イエスのこの戒めを守りその使命を全うした。

　インドが最近、国際原子力機関と取り交わした原子力安全保障協定の内容を見ると、米国を中心にした西側核保有国の核独占体制を維持するための、核不拡散協定と国際原子力機関の査察制度が骨抜きになり、最早機能しなくなったことが窺える。
　米国を盟主とした西側諸国の核兵器独占体制の崩壊は、道義的にも、現実的にも当然と言えば当然だが、イスラエルとイラン、インドとパキスタン等の間の核武装競争に歯止めがかからなくなり、地域的な核戦争が発生する恐れが現実のものになった。米国の金融制度崩壊が全世界に拡散する勢いを見せる今、正に寒暑到来、何れの所にか回避せんと言う事態に立ち至った感がある。
　しかし冷静に見れば答えが一つしかないことは明白である。「インドは民主国家であるから、核不拡散条約締結も、核兵器の査察も免除する」などと言う理由は、パキスタンならずとも、誰も認めるはずがない。核兵器の開発／製造／保有を全面的に禁止し、民生用核の開発／製造／保有／貿易を全面的に自由化する以外に道はなさそうだ。

　徳川幕府の威信が地に落ち、薩長土肥等の連合軍が江戸城に迫った時、徳川幕府は依然として国内最大の軍事力を保持し、一戦を交えることも可能だった。しかし徳川幕府は自ら武装解除し、江戸城を無血開城した。仮に両軍が一戦を交え、薩長土肥等の連合軍が勝利しても、諸藩が独自の兵力を保持する状況に変わりはなく、統一国家は実現しなかったろう。しかし最大軍閥の徳川幕府が自ら武装解除したことにより、薩摩、長州を初めとする諸藩も、最早私兵を養う大義名分を失い、新たに発足した明治政府が唯一軍事力を保持する近代国家体制が確立した。徳川幕府の決断により明治新政権の基礎が固まったと言える。

　同様にもし自由世界の盟主のアメリカが今、率先して核兵器の管理を国連に委譲することを提案するなら、ロシア、英国、フランス、中国、インド等もこれに従わざるを得ず、核武装競争を根絶することは不可能ではない。これらの国の一部は最終的に核兵器を廃絶することを核武装の大儀名文に掲げていることから、この種の提案に反対する理由がない。しかも莫大な核兵器開発費用を、核の平和利用に充当し、先端的核技術の移転も自由になるのだからなおさらである。

　戦争やテロがこの世から完全に消滅するには千年、あるいはそれ以上の時間を要するかも知れない。しかし目標をそこに定め、自らの十字架を負い今日の一歩を踏み出すことは、政治家にとどまらず、キリスト者、仏教者、イスラム教徒、その他の宗教者を含む全人類の務めと言えそうだ。

補足
ここまで書いたところで草稿をメール・マガジンを発行しているキリスト教徒の某氏にお送りしたところ以下の返事を頂いた。

＞アダム以来人類が犯し続けて来た罪を背負って死ぬ覚悟を弟子達に求め、
＞命のある限り十字架を背負って生き続け、最後もただ死ぬのではなく、
＞十字架にかかって死ねと言うのは極めて非情な命令です

「アダム以来人類が犯し続けて来た罪を背負って」死んだのはイエスです。イエスただひとりの死によってすべての人間の罪は帳消しにされたのです。人間のすべての罪を帳消しにする方法は、ただひとりイエスの死による他に、方法はないのです。イエスは弟子に死ねなどとは言いません。その必要がありません。

以下はこのご意見に対する私の回答：
パウロはローマ人への手紙第６章第３節で、「我々が洗礼を通じてイエス・キリストと一体になった時、我々は彼と死を共にしたことを忘れたのですか」と問いかけ、同章１３節で「あなた方は既に一度死んで新しい生を得たのだから、あなた方の全身を神の栄光を実現する義をこの世に示す道具として献げなさい」と述べています。New Living Translationより　(2008/10/01　回光庵返照居士)
