◆2 killed in heavy Pak shelling on 22 border posts, 13 hamlets
【Jammu】In a major escalation, Pakistani troops on the 23rd August indulged in heavy "unprovoked" shelling and firing on 22 border outposts and 13 villages, killing two civilians and injuring six others including a BSF jawan along the International Border in Jammu sector.
Pakistani security forces, however, accused Indian forces of starting the clash, and said two persons were killed on their side too. Though such firing is not uncommon, the past week has seen an escalation. The firing assumes significance as it follows India’s calling off of Foreign Secretary-level talks in view of Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit’s engagement with Kashmiri separatist leaders in the Capital.

○Forces responding effectively to ceasefire violations: Defence Minister
【Visakhapatnam】Death of two civilians in shelling by Pakistan in RS Pura Sector in Jammu and Kashmir on the 23rd August morning is highly condemnable, Defence Minister Arun Jaitley said after commissioning of the stealth anti-submarine warfare corvette INS Kamorta at the Naval Dockyard of the Eastern Naval Command here.
Noting that ceasefire violations by Pakistan have increased, he said Indian security forces are responding effectively to protect the country’s interests. “This is a fact that of late, these ceasefire violations by Pakistan have increased. But let everybody be assured that both our Army and BSF, who are respectively guarding the Line of Control (LoC) and the International Border, are fully vigilant. “They effectively respond to each violation and I have full faith and the country must have full faith that they are effectively protecting both our territory and national interest,” the Defence Minister told reporters here.

○No headway in talks to end political impasse in Pak
【ISLAMABAD】A tense standoff continued in Pakistan as overnight talks between the government and protesters demanding Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's resignation made little headway in breaking the political logjam.
Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf chief Imran Khan and cleric Tahirul Qadri are protesting alleged vote rigging in polls last year and demanding Sharif's resignation and holding of fresh polls.
