◆India in talks with Japanese lenders to raise more funds for highway projects




【New Delhi】India has initiated talks with Japanese lending agencies for funding of its ambitious highways programme which entails addition of over 50,000 km over the next five years.
 Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari held a discussion with representatives of Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) last week for increasing its lending to India, a senior ministry official said. "We want funding on soft terms for highways and expressways projects," said the official, who did not wish to be identified.

【New Delhi】The Airports Authority of India is working on a plan to operationalise about 50 airports in the country over the next 10 years as part of the Narendra Modi government's efforts to boost air connectivity, for which it believes a total of 200 additional airports are required over the long term.
 The government has constituted an inter-ministerial task force to identify and recommend airports that need to be operationalised in tier 2 and tier 3 cities across the country, AAI chairman RK Srivastava told the Economic Times in an interview. "In order to meet the objective of inclusive growth, the government plans to enhance regional and remote connectivity in a time-bound manner."

○France to give €2 billion for smart cities




【New Delhi】France has become the first country to make a financial commitment towards the National Democratic Alliance government’s ambitious ‘smart city’ project.
 Around €2 billion will be provided to convert Chandigarh, Nagpur and Puducherry into smart cities, ambassador of France in India Francois Richier announced on the 4th of November.
 While other countries, including the US, Japan, Spain, Germany, Netherlands and Singapore have entered into partnerships and have chosen their preferred cities to invest in, no figure was mentioned earlier, experts working in the area pointed out.
