◆Tech Mahindra, Telengana govt launch Blockchain district




【Hyderabad】The Telangana State Information Technology, Electronics and Communication department (ITE&C) has signed an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with digital transformation services provider Tech Mahindra Ltd (TML) to launch India's first Blockchain District Telangana.
 Hyderabad will house a centre of excellence (CoE) for the blockchain district, an incubator for technology and process development with innovative infrastructure and facilities, to foster growth of blockchain start-ups and companies, said a release.
 Tech Mahindra as a founding member of the Blockchain district will provide platform and technology assistance to all the incubators in the Blockchain District. Tech Mahindra will also empower accelerators to develop and solve market problems across its global customer ecosystem.
 Further, the Telengana ITE&C department will provide regulatory and policy support to enable and promote Blockchain growth both in India and globally.
 Meanwhile, Tech Mahindra also announced a strategic partnership with blockchain company Nucleus Vision (NV). This strategic partnership marks the beginning of Nucleus Vision’s global expansion strategy and Tech Mahindra’s foray into the blockchain market. Nucleus Vision was founded in 2014.

○Niti Aayog working on blockchain tech for drug industry




【New Delhi】Niti Aayog, a policy think tank of the Indian government chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is working with Apollo Hospitals, India's leading super speciality hospital, and information technology major Oracle on applying blockchain (decentralised) technology in pharmaceutical supply chain management to detect spurious drugs, Chief Executive Officer of NITI Aayog Amitabh Kant said here on August 3.
 Addressing a gathering through video-conferencing at the inaugural session of International Blockchain Congress 2018 for which Niti Aayog was a co-host, Kant said the organisation was working on applying the blockchain technology to pressing problems of the country in areas such as land registry, health records and fertiliser subsidy distribution among others.
 "There is a need to use blockchain to track and trace medicines and spurious drugs. Therefore, Niti Aayog, in collaboration with Apollo Hospitals and Oracle, is putting pharmaceutical supply chain in blockchain for complete traceability of drugs from manufacturer to consumer to protect our citizens from the menace of spuriousmedicines. The agency was working with judiciary too to see the civil cases related to land registration and mutation were expedited," he said.
 "The government has to play a leading role in allowing the application of blockchain technology. As the government, we need to make it easier to apply blockchain in pressing areas such as disbursement, land records, health records, he added.

○De Beers building blockchain to track diamonds from mine to customer




【Mumbai】De Beers, the single largest producer and purveyor of rough diamonds in the world, is building the first end-to-end diamond industry blockchain platform that will securely track a diamond from the mine to the end consumer.
 The platform, known as 'Tracr', is based on Etherium blockchain technology and is being built in collaboration with the industry players. 'Tracr' is being designed to benefit all diamond industry stakeholders - from large producers to small businesses - including the Indian diamond sector, which processes the majority of the world’s diamonds. According to Feriel Zerouki, Senior Vice President, International Relations and Ethical Initiatives, De Beers Group, The pilot was launched in January, to trial it with a small group, which also included Indian Sightholders.
