【CHENNAI】The Madras High Court on Thursday gave its nod to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to recommence the 19-km long "Chennai Port-Maduravoyal Elevated Corridor".
The project was mainly conceived for speedy evacuation of cargo from Chennai port. Work commenced in September 2010. However the project was stalled by Public Works Department (PWD) in 2012.
The NHAI said it was aggrieved by the stumbling blocks put up by the Tamil Nadu Government for the due execution of India's first elevated project involving Rs.1,800 crore. It was the "motivated, tainted" action of the State Government which had led to the situation of stalling of the project work.
By the January 28 letter, the PWD had sought revised Coastal Regulation Zone clearance for the elevated corridor and also said certain remedial measures should be carried out.
○Ennore Port to be renamed Kamarajar Port
【New Delhi】Ennore Port in Chennai, one of the 12 major ports in the country, will now be known as Kamarajar Port. Kumarasami Kamaraj (1903-1975) was a freedom fighter and the architect of modern Tamil Nadu.
"The Cabinet has taken a decision to rename Ennore Port Ltd (EPL) as Kamaraj Port Ltd (KPL)," a source said after the meeting here.
During the last fiscal, the port handled 17.88 mt of cargo. For 2013-14, the traffic throughput target for EPL stood at 24 mt. Given the increase in traffic, EPL has targeted augmenting its capacity to about 37 mt by the end of the 12th Five-Year Plan, i.e. by March 2017. The projects awarded for capacity augmentation in the port include development of an LNG terminal at an investment of Rs. 4,512 crore and development of a container terminal entailing Rs. 1,270 crore expenditure.
The port has seen export of 4,49,720 automobile units till December by automobile manufacturers including Nissan, Ford and Ashok Leyland from Chennai, Toyota from Bangalore and Honda from Delhi.
