◆One who abides nowhere may have one's intentions
【Review】The followers of Jesus, who baptized with The Holy Spirit, increased more rapidly than John, who baptized with water. However Jesus decided to leave Judea and go back once more to Galilee after an argument had developed between their disciples over the matter of ceremonial washing.
On the way back to Galilee, Jesus revealed the essence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit to a Samaritan woman fetching water, saying "God is spirit. The man, who worship in spirit and in truth, can receive the living water which will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."
It might be noted that, instead of "in sprit and in truth", Paul is using the expressions of "in Christ" or "in the Lord" 172 times in his letters, according to Pastor Kazuhiko Uchida, one of evangelical theologians in Japan.
There is a famous saying, "One should abide nowhere and yet develop one's intentions" in the Diamond Sutra, that is respected highly in the community of Zen Buddhism which regards the spiritual rebirth (baptism of The Holy Spirit) as one of its fundamental tenets. It is learned that the entire doctrine of Diamond Sutra is condensed in this short scripture.
When Japan's defeat was imminent, women and children were evacuated to rural. A boy, whose family too had dispersed to remote village, got dysentery and was close to death. There were neither clinics nor doctors in the vicinity. His mother went to a masseur at her wit's end and begged him to come and heal her son. The masseur came their house at night, smeared camellia oil on the abdomen of the boy and massaged with all his heart and soul until daybreak chanting a spell "Omushojunishogoshin (One who abides nowhere may have one's intentions)". The child was miraculously resuscitated. The mother also continued to massage her boy chanting "Omugi komugi ni-shou go-gou (4.5 liters of barley and wheat)." Then the child finally recovered completely. The mother was full of joy. After this, she always chanted the spell when she met difficulties and overcame them. However one of her friends told her that she had chanted the spell wrongly. It should be "Omushojunishogoshin" and means "One who abides nowhere may have one's intentions." After, it was told that, the spell was no longer effective for her.
○Samaritan woman
Jesus left Judea and went through Samaria to Galilee. He came to a town called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob's well was there, and Jesus sat down by the well. When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, "Will you give me a drink?"
The Samaritan woman said to him, "You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?" The Samaritan was an inhabitant of the ancient Israelite kingdom of Samaria. Jews despised Samaritans and did not associate with them, for they believed that Samaritans had mixed with other races.
Jesus answered her, "If you knew who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water."
The woman said, "You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well?"
Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."
The woman said to him, "Give me this water now."
He told her, "Go, call your husband and come back."
"I have no husband," she replied.
Jesus said to her, "You are right when you say you have no husband. The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true."
The woman said, "I can see that you are a prophet. Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem."
Jesus declared, "Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth."
